Campaign

The Sydney Opera House is arguably Australia’s most iconic venue, but it has historically been perceived as a formal, "classy" institution. In the summer of 2015, we worked to shift this attitude by making the venue feel more fun and accessible, essentially rebranding the Sydney Opera House as Your Summerhouse.

The challenge

While everyone knows the Opera House, many tourists and locals viewed it as a place only for high-brow performances or formal visits. Our goal was to break down those barriers and invite people to spend their summer days and nights there in a more relaxed way. We needed a visual language that felt eclectic and fresh, signaling a temporary departure from the venue's usual polished persona.

The process

We brought the "Summerhouse" concept to life by taking a piece of the Opera House (the traditional theatre chair) and reimagining it as the ultimate symbol of an Australian summer: the deck chair. I used these iconic deck chair stripes as the foundation for the visual identity, creating a bold new color scheme and a flexible brand template. This approach allowed us to maintain a consistent, high-energy look across all campaign communications, from large-scale posters to digital assets.

The impact

The campaign successfully repositioned the Opera House as a summer destination for everyone, not just theater-goers. By injecting a sense of playfulness and "sun-soaked" energy into the identity, we helped the venue feel like a communal backyard for the city. It was a great exercise in taking a world-famous brand and giving it a human, seasonal personality that resonated with a broader, more diverse audience.
